The project objective was to design the web gallery's user interface and user experience for the community-led art organization Vozdovacka Galerija. The gallery never had a website and only posted its exhibition images and reports on social media. They wanted to create a unique online space for the broad public and curators to interact with the gallery’s past and upcoming exhibitions.
PROBLEM
Web archives often take a bad rep, due to the sheer amount of content and complex structures that may hinder usability. What makes this website unique is that it serves two main purposes: showing the full gallery of archived exhibitions, and informing the public on upcoming exhibitions. How do we build the interface so that both sides can use the website with ease and fulfill their needs?
I researched some archive-based art gallery websites. Many of them feature a list-based, scrollable load of content. It’s difficult to navigate and find specific exhibitions.
RESEARCH
To access the stakeholder’s expectations and visual preferences, I conducted a short survey using Google Forms. I collected and analyzed their responses to come up with a few takeaways
SOLUTION
"How might we make the artworks accessible to the public in an online environment, while enabling them to explore the archive and be notified about upcoming exhibitions?"
I wanted to create the archive by using familiar patterns paired with some novel elements of content organization. This is done by using a spatial interface where all content is easily accessible from the main home page. However, all more detailed information is hidden via collapsible tabs, creating breathing space for quality images and key information about upcoming shows.
"How might we encourage the user to explore the online gallery archive and engage with the art?”
One of the solutions was to gamify the experience. Instead of creating a 2D, list-based structure to present the past exhibitions, I wanted to improve the experience by designing a spatial, free-form interface based on mobile direct access – The user is taken directly to the main action of the website, placed in an environment where he interacts freely.
“How might we inform users about upcoming exhibitions?”
Keeping the familiar patterns in mind, I came up with the idea of pop-ups to notify users about upcoming shows. This ties well into the gamified experience while presenting the information in a more direct way, which should attract the user’s attention quickly.

I was exploring different directions for layout and archive organization by creating quick sketches of the home page.
